Tell the FEC to Investigate Wal-Mart for Electioneering

American Rights at Work is demanding the Federal Election Commission investigate Wal-Mart for electioneering.  This comes on the heels of The Wall Street Journal's report that exposed Wal-Mart for telling its employees not to vote for Barack Obama and other pro-worker candidates who support the Employee Free Choice Act.  Over 40,000 people have already signed the petition from American Rights at Work, which they're planning to deliver to the FEC this Thursday.

As I reported earlier, EFCA would enable workers to unionize more easily, fostering job stability, fair wages, and adequate health care benefits.  To be sure, it would be a  nightmare for Wal-Mart, which has already spent millions quashing employees' efforts to unionize using intimidation, discrimination, retaliation, and rapid response teams flown in on private jets.  According to Michael Whitney of America Rights at Work, Wal-Mart's latest anti-union propaganda ploy wasn't the company's first assault on EFCA either.  Wal-Mart has been funding the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, a $30 million campaign that belies its name by working on behalf of anti-union lobbyists and right-wing policy groups to spread lies about EFCA and the candidates who back it.

The fact is that the majority of American workers—60 million—say they would support a union if they could.  So don't be duped by right wingers who claim EFCA isn't in workers' best interests, or that it's a divisive piece of legislation for Democrats.  Just this past weekend, conservatives and business groups alike were thrilled by George McGovern's anti-EFCA tirade in Friday's WSJ.  But as Ian Welsh at FireDogLake noted, McGovern is in bed with loathsome lobbyist Rick Berman and his Center for Union Facts, another deviously named but highly well-funded anti-union campaign working with Wal-Mart.

As the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart must be forced to set a better example regarding labor practices.  And here's our chance to make them by signing American Rights at Work's petition.  If Wal-Mart broke the law by threatening and scaring employees about which candidates to vote for this November, compel the FEC to hold the company accountable.  For more on Wal-Mart's anti-union ways, check out Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.

I can't believe people are getting away with telling half truths. Just because Walmart is the largest, it seems to give people the right to go after them. I work for Walmart and get paid well and can't get "federally funded" help, because I make to much.. I'm a cashier. I have very good insurance, hoiliday pay, paid vacations, sick leave and personal days with pay. Walmart is dedicated to environmental issues and has started an effort to become 100% waste free. No one at Walmart has told me how to vote! I make my own choices.

Your movie was shown at the Wind Gap, PA movie theater in an effort to block the Plainfield Twp, PA WalMart from opening.

Well, it worked! WalMart moved on, but residents are regretting it because a steel shredding plant opened in the industrial area that was to be rezoned as commerical for WalMart. The sounds of metal shredding run from 7AM-5PM, ruining the quality of life.

Good going!

Simple math. As a uniom member in a different field,The unions really do not care about people its about each member x the dollar. With the size of Wal-Mart and the amount of persons employed the union/s can controll the political system. Period

I know Walmart is not the only retailer that is not paying a living wage. However considering how they treat their employees I feel they should be run out of business.
I am very proud of all who stood up to now allowing that store in the area. I am sure that took a lot of hard work.
I also do not shop at Circuit City anymore because of the way they treat their employees. I think it is about time the consumer take an interest in how our fellow women & men are treated. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. What ever happened to that golden rule.

I am a 16 + year Wal-Mart associate. I did not attend the meetings you are referring to but have about 11 close friends that did. These friends took notes and are literate, intelligent people. When I read all the trash on here about Wal-Mart telling workers how to vote I asked everyone that went to the meetings if they felt pressured or manipulated to vote for any specific candidate. They ALL said no. Each and every person said politics wasn't even an issue. 2 people from our store went to a morning meeting and 2 went to an afternoon meeting until they got through all the department managers. Meaning that most attended different meetings and all did not hear the same meeting. So, the message didn't change from time to time.

Wal-Mart in recent years has done things I haven't been very happy about but I still have a good paying job. If unions came into our store I would lose money on the hour. I would lose what freedom I have with my schedule. And let's look at what a union would benefit from snaring the great big Wal-Mart - hmmmm .... millions and millions in union dues. I don't want a union, I don't need a union. Every - and I mean EVERY- single ethical or improper thing that I have ever had issue with has been taken care of by my using the open door policy that Wal-Mart has available to every associate.
